Topeka Area Wineries

FOR THE MORE DISCERNING PALATE

These excellent wineries located just outside of the Capital City offer a bouquet that leaves nothing to be desired. From patios with vibrant views of the vineyard to live music events and local makers featured as offerings, these Kansas wineries will have you sipping the day away. Kansas wines differ quite a lot from other states, as the grape variety grown here are made for the plains growing environment. Local Kansas wine makers love to indulge in stories, descriptions, and the information behind the wine they make, so make sure to call and ask about a tour, schedule a tasting, and meet the makers while you are on-site.

CROOKED POST WINERY

Crooked Post Winery, opened in 2014 at Lake Perry just north of Topeka, is a unique winery inspired by Italian architecture and style of wine. Their wine is made true to the flavor of the grape it comes from, crafted by hand, and not manipulated to taste like any other wine. They use their own grown French-American hybrid grapes that are suitable for the Kansas climate in all their wines; the Vineyard location has 3,700 vines and the Winery location has 1,500. All wine is made on site and tours can be requested. Craft beer from Norsemen Brewery and Free State Brewery always available along with quarterly whiskey tastings.

Crooked Post has a 900 square foot event room that when not being used by guests can be used for small weddings, parties, corporate events and special occasions. The event space also has an ample outside patio seating overlooking the wood fired pizza oven that runs from April through November with always fresh Italian style pizzas made one at a time. Monthly events vary from music to art classes and something is always happening. They are truly a destination get away with something for everyone to enjoy: wood fired pizzas, snacks, retail and Kansas wine and Kansas craft beers.

GLACIERS EDGE WINERY

Glaciers Edge Winery began with eight grape vines. From those first vines, another 120 were planted. Beyond these initial plantings, the winery established close to 3000 vines, with more plantings to come. As the owners learned more about viticulture and witnessed the success of other winemakers and the growth of the Kansas wine industry, they wondered “Why not us?” So, they began planning and listening to others and several years later, Glaciers Edge became part of the Kansas viticulture and wine industry. Glacier’s Edge’s mission is to “be positive ambassadors to our local wine, food and tourism industry, support our fellow grape growers and winemakers, to educate wine friendly people about Kansas grapes and wines, and to produce exceptional Kansas wines.”

PRAIRIE FIRE WINERY

Located in the Flint Hills, Prairie Fire Winery is destined to have some of the best views in the state of Kansas. A short drive from the city of Topeka and it will be easy to see why. Don’t be fooled though; the winery has more than just views to offer.

The winery, located on 60 acres, produces 15 different wines including white, red, blush and sparkling, all from Kansas grown grapes. After sampling the wine selection, head out to see the rows and rows of grapes -- 33 rows to be exact. The highest point on the land, just a quick walk uphill, allows for some great photo opportunities as you can see for miles and miles in each direction.
