After 13 years and a $332 million renovation, the Kansas State Capitol is complete and gleaming like the day it was built. The historic tour highlights include murals by David H Overmyer, John Steuart Curry, ceremonial governor’s office, Senate Chamber, Representative Hall, old Kansas Supreme Court, and State Library of Kansas.

Indoors, outdoors, or both? Mostly indoors. Dome tour allows participants to walk around the outside of the dome.

Are there scholarships, general grants, or transportation grants available? The Kansas Museum of History and Kansas State Capitol are partnering with Shawnee County Historical Society and the John Ritchie House to provide schools within 75 miles of Topeka grants to offset the cost of tours and field trips to sites focusing on the enduring struggle for freedom.
The Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area (41 counties within the heritage area) also is offering help with 75 percent of funding towards transportation costs.  Get more information about the Bus on Us grant from Freedom's Frontier.

How long will the tour take from start to finish? It takes about an hour for the historic tour, and if you choose to do the dome tour it’s 45 minutes.

  • All day (minimum 5 hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. recommended) experience to the Kansas State Capitol, the Historic Ritchie House and Brown V Board of Education NHS, to connect over 100 years of history involving the struggle for freedom.

Pre-Post classroom visits available upon request? Yes. Guided tours are only offered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Self-Guided tours are available 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays as well. Dome tour is only available on the weekdays.

Max number of students the venue can accommodate for a tour?

  • Historic tour: 25-30
  • Dome tour: No more than 30 at a time (Not recommended for those with heart, back, neck, knee or breathing problems, those with acrophobia or those with a disability that prevents them from walking unassisted. Children must be at least 4-years-old. (Full rules)

Minimum number of participants needed for a tour? No minimum

Number of adults per student needed? It’s recommended that there is 1 adult per 10 students.

Can they eat lunch inside/on site and/or bring their own lunches? Students can eat lunch in the Visitors’ Center or on the south lawn of the Capitol, weather permitting.

Where do the busses need to park? Is this also where the kids get dropped off? Drop kids off at the ground level entrance on the north side of the Capitol, facing 8th Avenue. If using a GPS to get to the Capitol, enter the address as 8th and Van Buren, Topeka KS.
